Wind Farm

CASE STUDY 1: Wind Energy

Project Scope
The scope of work for Two Way Direct on this project was to design and implement radio communication systems for multiple wind energy sites throughout the country. The project consisted of hundreds of sites, each in rural areas of the country with an average of 15 miles of operational territory per site. Each site was using different models of radios and different programming at each site with limited coverage.

Project Challenge
The challenge was to creatively implement radio communication systems which would maximize coverage, efficiency, and save money.

Two Way Direct Solution
After consulting with the client, Two Way Direct discovered that the client's projects last about four months and never exceed 100 sites in operation at once. To lay down the foundation for the client's improved communication program, Two Way Direct applied and obtained approval for a custom FCC License on behalf of the client which would cover up to 500 sites with 25 radios and 2 repeaters at each site anywhere in the country. Next, we implemented a recycling program to give the client $100 for every old working or non-working two-way radio traded-in. The customer applied these funds to the purchase of new Icom F60V waterproof handheld radios with 6-bank multi-unit chargers and 50-Watt Icom FR4000 repeaters for all projects, which were also programmed exactly the same for every site. This way, the customer could re-use equipment at new sites after old sites were completed. This concept of reducing, reusing and recycling equipment saved the customer over a million dollars while maximizing the coverage and efficiency of their radio communications.

CASE STUDY 2: Enviro-Business Society of San Diego State University

Project Scope
Earth Day is an annual event sponsored by the Enviro-Business Society of San Diego State University that brings the community together to celebrate the planet and spread awareness of sustainable lifestyles.

Project Challenge
To provide long-range radio communications for all staff members working the event.

Two Way Direct Solution
Two Way Direct donated free two-way radios and earpieces for the event to ensure operations ran as efficiently as possible. Matthew Nelson, VP of Finance for the Enviro-Business Society (e3) commented "The radio communication system provided by Two Way Direct was overwhelmingly effective and contributed greatly to a well organized execution of our plans. All of our exhibitors were genuinely impressed with the level of organization we displayed for hosting an event of its scale, and the two-way radios were instrumental for achieving such high remarks. They were so effective that some users were able to run errands 2 miles from the site while maintaining the ability to respond when needed. The use of Two Way Direct's two-way radios provided an invaluable service to e3, and we look forward to working with TWD for future events."

CASE STUDY 3: UL11 Speedboat Race Team

Project Scope
The UL-11 Speedboat Race Team had been shopping online for two-way radios when they decided to send a Quote Request to Two Way Direct.

Project Challenge
Provide affordable, reliable two-way radios and headsets.

Two Way Direct Solution
Two Way Direct was able to meet the race team's budget by selling them refurbished Blackbox two-way radios. Had UL-11 continued to shop online, they would have paid over twice the amount for the same radios. Instead, after consulting with Two Way Direct, they were able to get exactly what they needed and saved hundreds of dollars.

CASE STUDY 4: Hotels

Project Scope
At a local San Diego hotel, an intruder had been tapping into the security channel frequency and disrupting the hotel's communications. With more than 80 employees on radio during a given day, such disruption caused productivity to take a steep decline.

Project Challenge
To create a secure radio communication network and block out all external interference as well as unwanted eavesdroppers.

Two Way Direct Solution
Since the hotel's current radios were damaged and outdated, Two Way Direct offered the hotel $8,000 through the "Recycle and Save " program to jump-start their transition to a more secure and reliable network. Two Way Direct then switched them over to the new IC-F60V waterproof two-way radio by Icom America , which offers scrambling codes to prevent eavesdroppers from listening in, as well as digital privacy line codes to keep external interference from coming in.
